The Words

Every word the other pages lean on, defined once, in plain English, with what other people call it.

Fifty-one words. Each one is defined once, here, and the other pages use it without stopping to explain. If a word on any page is not on this list, that is a bug in the site.

The whole
Agent

the thing that owns a loop and survives between runs: an identity, a set of tools, a memory, a policy, and triggers. Not the model.

Also called: autonomous agent · AI agent · bot · assistant · see Agent
Loop

the mechanism: the model replies, the runtime acts on the reply, the result goes back into context, and the model replies again until it returns an answer.

Also called: agentic loop · ReAct loop · tool loop · the ring · see Loop
Run

one trip through the loop, from a cold trigger to a committed result. It starts and it ends.

Also called: execution · job · invocation · session (loosely) · see Loop
Pass

one trip around the ring inside a run. Every pass is exactly one model call.

Also called: iteration · step · turn (ambiguous) · see Loop
Turn

an ambiguous word. Some people mean one model call, some mean one user-and-assistant exchange. This site says pass for the first and exchange for the second.

Also called: round · exchange · see Names
Workflow

a shape where code decides the steps and the model fills them in. Prompt chaining, routing, parallelization. You can draw it before it runs.

Also called: pipeline · chain · orchestration (loosely) · see Patterns
Runtime

your code around the model. It wakes the loop, builds the context, reads the reply, executes the tools, checks the budget, validates the output, writes the result. Everything that is not step 04.

Also called: harness · scaffold · agent loop code · executor · orchestrator (when the tools are agents) · see Loop
Harness

another word for the runtime, used when the emphasis is on the code that holds the model in place and feeds it. Same thing.

Also called: scaffold · runtime · framework · see Loop
Orchestrator

a runtime, or an agent, whose tools are other agents. It decides what to delegate; each worker runs its own loop.

Also called: supervisor · manager · GI · coordinator · see Patterns
The model side
Model

the neural network that reads a context and writes a reply. It has no memory, no network, no hands. Step 04 and nothing else.

Also called: LLM · the AI · Claude · the brain (wrongly) · see Loop
LLM

large language model. The model. The letters do not add anything.

Also called: foundation model · frontier model · see Loop
Inference

one model call: context in, reply out. The only thing that costs tokens.

Also called: completion · generation · sampling · calling the model · see Loop
Token

the unit the model reads and writes, roughly three quarters of a word in English. Cost, limits and the context window are all counted in tokens.

Also called: tokens in / tokens out · see Names
Context

everything sent to the model on one pass: system prompt, tool definitions, retrieved documents, prior messages, and the live input at the tail. Rebuilt every pass.

Also called: the prompt · the messages · the conversation · the input · see Loop
Context window

the maximum number of tokens one pass can carry. A size limit, not the content.

Also called: window · context length · max context · see Names
System prompt

the standing instructions at the front of the context: who the model is, the rules, the format. The seat file, in this house.

Also called: system message · instructions · persona · the seat · see Agent
Prompt

loosely, whatever you send the model. Precisely, the whole context. When someone says the prompt they usually mean the system prompt or the last user message; ask which.

Also called: instruction · query · message · see Names
Stop reason

the field on every reply that says why the model stopped: it wants a tool, it is done, it hit the token cap, or it refused. The runtime routes on this.

Also called: finish reason · stop_reason · end_turn / tool_use · see Forks
Extended thinking

the model reasoning to itself before the reply. Happens inside step 04; changes cost and quality, not the shape of the loop.

Also called: reasoning · chain of thought · thinking tokens · see Myths
Streaming

receiving the reply as it is written instead of all at once. A delivery detail of step 04.

Also called: SSE · token streaming · see Myths
Prompt caching

reusing the front of the context across passes so the static part is not paid for again. Why static content goes first.

Also called: cache · cached prefix · KV cache · see Loop
The tool side
Tool

a function the runtime can run on the model's behalf. The model sees its name, description and input schema; the runtime holds the code.

Also called: function · action · capability · skill (some frameworks) · leg · see Loop
Tool definition

the JSON the model is shown: name, description, input schema. Part of the context. Not the code.

Also called: tool schema · function spec · see Names
Tool request

the block the model writes when it wants a tool: which tool, with which arguments. A request, not an execution.

Also called: tool call · function call · tool_use block · see Myths
Tool result

what the runtime sends back after running a tool, as text, in the next message. Errors ride the same way.

Also called: tool_result · observation · function response · tool output · see Loop
Function calling

the API feature that lets a model emit tool requests. One call with one request and no loop is function calling; a loop makes it an agent.

Also called: tool use · tool calling · see Myths
Dispatch

the runtime reading the tool requests and running each one. Step 06. Never the model.

Also called: tool executor · tool runner · see Loop
Parallel tools

several tool requests in one reply, run side by side, all returned before the next pass. One agent, one pass, several legs.

Also called: fan-out · parallel tool use · see Myths
HITL

human in the loop: a person approves, edits or denies a tool request before it runs. Sits on the legs you mark, usually writes and money.

Also called: approval gate · permission prompt · confirmation · see Forks
MCP

Model Context Protocol. A standard way for a runtime to discover and call tools that live in another process or server. Tools by plug rather than by code.

Also called: Model Context Protocol · MCP server · see Patterns
RAG

retrieval augmented generation: fetching documents and putting them into the context before the model call. One way of doing step 02. Not a step of its own.

Also called: retrieval · grounding · vector search · see Myths
The runtime side
Trigger

whatever wakes a run: a cron tick, a queue row claimed, an inbound message, a webhook, a user pressing send. Fires once.

Also called: invocation · entrypoint · event · wake · see Loop
Cron

a clock that fires a trigger on a schedule. Six pm every day, every five minutes.

Also called: scheduler · scheduled job · tick · see Loop
Webhook

an outside service calling a URL of yours when something happens. A trigger you did not schedule.

Also called: callback · event hook · see Loop
Queue

a list of jobs waiting to be run. A worker claims a row and that claim is the trigger.

Also called: job queue · task queue · work queue · see Loop
Breaker

the guard before every model call: passes, tokens, dollars, seconds. Over the ceiling ends the run without spending the call.

Also called: circuit breaker · budget guard · max turns · iteration cap · kill switch · see Forks
Budget

the ceilings the breaker enforces. Per run and per day.

Also called: limits · quota · spend cap · see Forks
Validate

checking the final answer against a schema before anything downstream reads it. Bad output bounces back for one more pass.

Also called: structured output · schema check · output parser · typecheck · see Forks
Structured output

forcing the reply into a fixed JSON shape, usually by giving the model a tool whose input schema is the shape you want.

Also called: JSON mode · schema-constrained output · see Forks
Guardrails

checks on what goes in or comes out. Input guardrails live at context, output guardrails at validate. A vague word; ask which.

Also called: safety filters · policies · see Forks
Commit

the end of a run: write the result, respond, release the lock, log the cost.

Also called: persist · finalize · side effects · see Loop
Memory

a store the runtime writes at commit and reads at context. The model itself remembers nothing between passes.

Also called: long-term memory · state · scratchpad · vector memory · see Agent
State

everything about the agent that persists between runs: memory, settings, the ledger. Lives in the runtime, never in the model.

Also called: session state · agent state · see Agent
Ledger

the row written per run that says what it cost: tokens in, tokens out, dollars, passes. The proof a run happened.

Also called: usage log · audit log · run record · see Run
The plumbing
API

the door you call the model through over the network. For this house, the Anthropic Messages API: one request with a context, one response with a reply.

Also called: endpoint · the Messages API · REST API · see Names
SDK

a library that wraps the API in your language so you do not write HTTP by hand. The Anthropic SDK also ships a tool runner, which is a ready-made loop.

Also called: client library · client · see Names
Provider

who serves the model: Anthropic, Google, xAI. This house puts them behind one adapter so the run does not care.

Also called: vendor · model provider · adapter · see Run
Packet

this house's rule: code runs the queries and hands the agent everything at once, before the model call. Tools before the model, zero tool requests during.

Also called: one-shot context · prefetch · the packet rule · see Run
Seat

this house's word for one agent's standing identity: who they are and which model serves them. One file per seat.

Also called: persona · profile · role · system prompt · see Agent
Subagent

an agent started by another agent, run to completion, and returned as a result. To the parent it is a tool.

Also called: worker · child agent · delegate · see Patterns
Multi-agent

any shape with more than one loop: orchestrator and workers, crews, swarms. Usually one orchestrator and several subagents.

Also called: crew · swarm · agent team · org · see Patterns
